为爵床科植物马蓝的干燥根和根茎，11-12月采挖，除去杂质，洗净，润透，切厚片，干燥。在宋代《本草图经》即载其药用，云：“马蓝，连根采之，培捣下筛，酒服钱匕，治妇人败血甚佳。”
南板蓝根各家论述
《四川中药志》记载：“清热解毒，避疫杀虫；主伤寒发斑，丹毒，瘟疫发颐及大头瘟。”
南板蓝根性状
【性味】 味苦，性寒。
【归经】 归心，肝，胃经。
为类圆形，大小不一的薄片，外表皮灰棕色或暗棕色，切断面显纤维性，中部有白色海绵状的髓，质硬而韧，气微，味微苦。
