安息香为安息香科植物安息香树或越南安息香的树脂，树干经自然损伤或于夏、秋二季割裂树干，收集流出的树脂，阴干。
安息香原产于中亚古安息国、龟兹国、漕国、阿拉伯半岛及伊朗高原，唐宋时因以旧名。《酉阳杂俎》载安息香出波斯国，作药材用。
《新修本草》曰：“安息香，味辛，香、平、无毒。主心腹恶气鬼。西戎似松脂，黄黑各为块，新者亦柔韧”。

安息香性状
【性味】 味辛，苦，性平。
【归经】 归心，脾经。
不规则的小块，稍扁平，常粘结成团块，表面橙黄色，具蜡样光泽（自然出脂）；
或为不规则的圆柱状、扁平块状，表面灰白色至淡黄白色（人工割脂）；质脆，易碎，断面平坦，白色,放置后逐渐变为淡黄棕色至红棕色，加热则软化熔融。气芳香，味微辛，嚼之有砂粒感。
