为败酱科植物黄花败酱和白花败酱的干燥全草，夏季开花前采挖，晒至半干，扎成束，再阴干。《神农本草经》列为上品，为常用的清热解毒药。
败酱草各家论述
据《全国中草药汇编》记载：“清热解毒，破瘀排脓；主肠痈，肺痈，痢疾，带下，热毒痈肿。”
败酱草性状
【性味】 味辛、苦，性微寒。
【归经】 归肺、大肠、肝经。
干燥全株，长短不等，根茎有节，上生须状细根。茎圆柱形，外表黄棕色或黄绿色，有纵向纹理，被有粗毛。质脆，易拆断，断面中空，白色。叶多皱缩、破碎，或已脱落。全株有陈腐的豆酱气，味苦。
