为罂粟科植物白屈菜的带花全草，出自《救荒本草》，属全草类，5～7月开花时采收地上部分；喜阳光充足，温暖湿润气候，耐寒，耐热，不择土壤，耐干旱；生于山谷湿润地、水沟边、绿林草地或草丛中、住宅附近。

据《山西中药志》记载：“下心火，退烧解热，消炎杀菌，镇痛镇静。”
白屈菜性状
【性味】 味苦，性凉，有小毒。
【归经】 归肺，心，肾经。
根圆锥状，茎圆柱形，中空，表面黄绿色，有白粉，质轻易折断；叶互生，多皱缩破碎；叶片完整者羽状分裂，裂片先端钝，上面黄绿色，下面灰绿色，具白色柔毛，尤以叶脉为多。花瓣4片，卵圆形，黄色，常已脱落。蒴果细圆柱形，有众多细小、黑色具光泽的卵形种子。气微，味微苦。
