为百合科植物菝葜的干燥根茎，秋末至次年春采挖，除去须根，洗净，晒干或趁鲜切片，干燥。《别录》记载：“主腰背寒痛，风痹，益血气，止小便利。”

《医林纂要》记载：“缓肝坚肾，清小肠火，化膀胱水。主恶疮，毒疮，虫毒。”
菝葜性状
【性味】 味甘，酸，性平。
【归经】 归肝，肾经。
为不规则块状或弯曲扁柱形，有结节状隆起，表面黄棕色或紫棕色，具圆锥状突起的茎基痕，并残留坚硬的刺状须根残基或细根。质坚硬，难折断，断面呈棕黄色或红棕色，纤维性，可见点状维管束和多数小亮点。切片呈不规则形，边缘不整齐，切面粗纤维性；质硬，折断时有粉尘飞扬。气微，味微苦、涩。
