《本草求真》记载：“锁阳，本与苁蓉同为一类。凡阴气虚损，精血衰败，大便燥结，治可用此以啖，并代苁蓉，煮粥弥佳，则知其性虽温，其体仍润，未可云为命门火衰必用之药也。”
锁阳性状
【性味】 味甘，性温。
【归经】 归脾、肾、大肠经。
呈扁圆柱形，微弯曲，表面棕色或棕褐色，粗糙，具明显纵沟及不规则凹陷，有的残存三角形的黑棕色鳞片。体重，质硬，难折断，断面浅棕色或棕褐色，有黄色三角状维管束。气微，味甘而涩。
