为百合科植物麦冬或沿阶草的干燥块根,夏季采挖,洗净,反复暴晒、堆置,至七八成干,除去须根,干燥。《神农本草经》记载:“主心腹结气,伤中伤饱,胃络脉绝,羸瘦短气。”

《本经疏证》记载:“麦门冬,下焦实证,非见手掌烦热,唇口干燥,不可用也。上气因于风,因于痰,不因于火,咽喉不利者不可用也。虚羸气少,不气逆欲吐,反下利者,不可用也。脉非结代,微而不欲绝者,不可用也。”
