毛麝香为玄参科植物毛麝香的全草，生于山野草丛中，夏、秋采收，切段晒干鲜用。
《岭南采药录》：毛麝香，枝叶根皮，皆含芳香之气，能引药透入肌肤，颇有麝香之功用，故名。

据《岭南采药录》记载：“理跌打伤，能消肿止痛，散疮疡恶毒；主气痛”
毛麝香性状
【性味】 味辛，性温。
根残存，有分枝，外表黑褐色，有浅纵纹，被疏长毛；质坚易折断、中空，稍呈纤维性；
叶极皱缩，上面黑褐色，下面浅棕褐色，被柔毛，密具下凹的腺点。有的可见花或果实、萼宿存，茶褐色，蒴果茶褐色或黄棕色，气香浓烈，味稍辣而凉。
