为禾本科植物薏苡的根。秋季采挖，洗净，晒干。生于屋旁、荒野、河边、溪涧或阴湿山谷中。根含薏苡素、棕榈酸、硬脂酸、豆甾醇、β-和γ-谷甾醇、氯化钾、葡萄糖、蛋白质、淀粉等。

《草木便方》记载：“主下气，癥瘕积聚，消食，除大肠膨肫胀，久嗽损伤，利小肠。”
薏苡根性状
【性味】 味苦，甘，性寒。
【归经】 归脾、膀胱经。
根细柱形或不规则形，外表皮灰黄色或灰棕色，具纵皱纹及须根痕。切面灰黄色或淡棕色，有众多小孔排列成环或已破裂，外皮易与内部分离。根茎灰黄色或黄棕色，外表皮可见着生多数残根及茎基。质坚韧。气微，味淡。
