为远志科植物远志或西伯利亚远志的干燥根，春、秋二季采挖，除去须根及泥沙，晒干。生于草原、山坡草地、灌丛中以及杂木林下，海拔200-2300米。
《本经》记载：“主咳逆伤中，补不足，除邪气，利九窍，益智慧，耳目聪明，强志倍力。”

《药品化义》记载：“远志，味辛重大泄，入心开窍，宣散之药。凡痰涎伏心，壅塞心窍，致心气实热，为昏愦神呆，为睡卧不宁，为恍惚惊怖，为健忘，为梦魇，为小儿客忤，暂以豁痰利窍，使心气开通，则神魂自宁也。”
远志（种植）性状
【性味】 味苦、辛、性温。
【归经】 归心、肾、肺经。
呈圆柱形，略弯曲，表面灰黄色至灰棕色，有较密并深陷的横皱纹、纵皱纹及裂纹，老根的横皱纹较密更深陷，略呈结节状，质硬而脆，易折断，断面皮部棕黄色，木部黄白色，皮部易与木部剥离，气微，味苦、微辛，嚼之有刺喉感。
